Pea beans cooked

  • Peas probably have originated in the sub-Himalayan plains of northwest India.
  • There are many different varieties of peas available (yellow, black-eyed, and purple peas) with green peas being the most frequently consumed.
  • Peas are a very good source of vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C.
  • Peas have essential B-complex vitamins such as pantothenic acid, niacin, thiamin, and pyridoxine.
  • Peas are a rich source of many minerals such as calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and manganese.
  • Peas have a low glycemic index (GI).
  • Green peas contain antinutrients that may interfere with the absorption of some nutrients and cause digestive distress. However, this is not a problem for most people.
  • Only about 5% of the peas grown are sold fresh, the rest are either frozen or canned.
